Why is learning to play the guitar so challenging?

“Maybe I should just give up on guitar, I’ll never be a great player, I’m just no good at this, I suck…

“I’m not good at guitar now, and I probably never will be. I wasn’t very good last year either, and if I don’t try something different I will continue to stuck years from now.

I’m sick and tired of this and its embarrassing when others hear me play my guitar.

I get nervous and afraid because I know that I’m not good. This is extremely frustrating because no matter what I do I can’t get any better.

Music is something I am passionate about and sometimes I feel good playing guitar but other times I wonder why I even try."

Does this sound familiar?

Hi there, my name is Ty and I totally understand what you are going through right now because I had a very difficult time learning to play the guitar too.

There were so many other guitar players that I wanted to play like, and it was extremely frustrating. I wanted to play really fast and I can remember that I would even get angry with myself.

It was awful because I couldn’t play along with other musicians. I also didn’t know anything about theory so I couldn’t write any songs.

My rhythm was horrible and learning how to improvise on guitar wasn’t even in my reality.

I only knew how to play one scale and it was embarrassing because I felt like I couldn’t keep up with other musicians who knew their instruments.

Most of my guitar playing consisted of trying to learn songs and riffs, and even when I learned my scales and theory I had no clue how to actually apply it in my songwriting, improvisation, or playing with others.

Most of the students I have taught come here with these same challenges. Helping them progress through these struggles is the easiest part of my job because I know what it is like being there.
